The Bethwaite Family
Nicky & Julian Bethwaite are 2 of the 4 children of Frank & Nel Bethwaite, and are based in Sydney, Australia. Both learned to sail at Northbridge Sailing Club on the lower north shore and followed different paths to sailing success. Nicky chose the Olympic route competing in Seoul in 1988 in the 470, coaching the Soling in Atlanta in 1996 and then competing in the Yngling in Athens in 2004.
Julian explored the world of development design via 18ft skiffs, multis and one-off designs and worked with Frank in the family business – Bethwaite Design. In 1996, Julian entered into and won the ISAF selection process that saw the double handed 49er skiff being adopted for the 2000 Olympics. This design was quickly followed by the 29er and both boats are now being sailed right around the world. The 49er FX, with a slightly smaller rig, was adopted as the female double handed skiff for the 2016 Olympics.
Older brother Mark also represented Australia in 3 Olympics in the Flying Dutchman and Soling and is now a keen Laser sailor, enthusiastically participating in (and sometimes winning) Masters World Championships around the world.
Recent projects include an all-carbon rig for the 29er, due for release in late 2016. A tunnel hulled single-hander is also in an advanced stage of development, due for release sometime in 2016.
Bethwaite Design, based in Sydney, Australia, has been at the forefront of design and technology for over 60 years. Frank Bethwaite (1920-2012) broke new ground in the 1960s with his research on aero and hydrodynamic design, evidenced by successful performances of his Cherubs, 18ft skiffs, NS14s and the international Tasar. His books – High Performance Sailing, Higher Performance Sailing and Fast Handling Technique – have never been out of print and are a wealth of information about design, the weather and winning races.
